‘Legacy Village Shopping Center’ for Memory Care Residents Opens at Thomasville Senior Living Community

Creative Therapy Program Helps Promotes Positive Cognition Efforts among Those with Alzheimer’s and Other Memory Care Disorders

THOMASVILLE, Ga. (July 19, 2016) – Memory care residents at Legacy Village at Plantation Manor now have a “shopping center” of their very own, offering a variety of clothing, snacks and other personal items, as part of a creative therapy program.

Located in The Harbor Memory Care wing at Legacy Village at Plantation Manor in downtown Thomasville, the “Legacy Village Shopping Center” was created to offer a real-life shopping experience to give the memory care residents a chance to feel more independent and alive.

“While our residents don’t usually shop in public anymore, this new program promotes positive cognition efforts as they make choices and work with other residents and caregivers in choosing items they want or need. It also prompts memories of a time when they did shop in public. This can create positive memories for residents and is always a fun time for them,” Shavoka Mays, Legacy Village at Plantation Manor’s life enrichment coordinator, said.

Residents are able to shop at the Legacy Village Shopping Center using “Legacy Dollars”. Legacy Dollars are non-cash reward dollars earned through participation in exercise, bingo or other activities.

The Legacy Village Shopping Center will open once a month. While the initial stock was supplied by Legacy Village caregiver Jeannie Singleton, donations are being solicited to keep the store open in upcoming months. Acceptable donations include small unwrapped snacks, unused personal items, clothing and shoes for men and women (all sizes), books, toiletries, etc.
